Al Prodgers' Stand Up Comedy Video - "Of Course I'll Still Respect You In The Morning"

"My name is Al Prodgers and Im a stand-up comic. If that sounds like a standard greeting for a support group, then youre not far off the mark. Ive realised that my career as a part-time slapstick stunt baboon is more an affliction than a fulfilling creative passion.

The South African stand-up comedy circuit is growing, but still in its infancy compared to other parts of the world. However, what we lack in size, we make up for with enormous enthusiasm. Perhaps its because we understand what its like to lose our freedom of speech, that weve now become very loud and proud. Its also an exciting time for those of us who try to get laughs that are not based on the lowest common denominator of racial stereotypes and exploding toilets.

After a few years developing my act, which included tours throughout southern Africa and trips to Europe and North America, I was approached by Doug Hoseck to record my stuff, as a stand-up comedy video/DVD. I thought it might be difficult to make, but that turned out to be the easy bit. Putting together a creative team, a quality support act (Kedibone Mualudzi) and a venue (Tanz Cafe) was soon accomplished thanks to the helpful people who work at the sharp end of the industry.

However, traditional record companies guard the portals to distribution and the wallets of promotion and advertising very closely indeed.

But new technology has brought new opportunities. Doug came up with the idea of offering a product whereby anybody can download stand-up comedy and enjoy the show anywhere in the world. For those of you who live in South Africa under the iron fist of Internet traffic caps, we have created a smaller download (video quality) of 344Mb. This means you can get the jokes before all the characters mentioned die of old age. If you want the stand-up comedy DVD quality bigger file, it might be cheaper and quicker to fly to Hong Kong and download the movie than buy another few gigs from our wonderful fixed line operator. But feel free to be our guest and try your luck anyway.

Im quite proud of the movie we made by shooting a single performance in Johannesburg. It was a typical one-night stand experience, hence the title, Of Course Ill Still Respect You In The Morning. Our style is deliberately rough with a bootleg feel to give the viewer a taste of the atmosphere in a typical comedy venue. Everything was done in a single take to preserve authenticity and to minimise distractions for the live audience. Their reactions, and their heckles, are genuine. We had a damn fine time and I hope anybody who watches the show will enjoy it too.

Is it accessible to non South Africans? I believe so. There might be the odd colloquial term that baffles, but the context will explain it all. Besides, familiarising yourself with these slang expressions could help you to understand the guy who just emigrated from South Africa and moved in next door to you. And, if you are that guy, you definitely want a reminder of the laughter and mayhem youre missing.
